    The Asheville VA Medical Center is a tertiary care facility in all areas except hemodialysis, neurosurgery, and radiation therapy, and is classified as a Clinical Referral Level II Facility.     Haywood Regional Medical Center is a comprehensive acute care Medical Center with a targeted focus on preventive healthcare. Our history of caring for residents of Haywood County and surrounding counties began in 1927 when Haywood County Hospital opened as the first county hospital in the state.     Pardee is a not-for profit community hospital founded in 1953. Pardee Hospital is licensed for 222 acute care beds. In addition to the hospital, Pardee has a 130-bed nursing facility, an adult day care center, home health services, a health education center, a rehab and sports therapy complex, a women’s health center, two urgent care facilities and several family and internal medicine practices. Pardee is noted for its outreach in the community through our wellness and prevention services, as well as high-tech diagnostic and treatment capabilities.     From its beginnings in 1938, CarePartners Thoms Inpatient Rehabilitation Hospital has stood its ground as a regional leader in physical medicine, offering traditional and specialized rehabilitation programs to individuals with physical, cognitive, and developmental impairments.

    Established as a 20-bed haven for children with disabilities, CarePartners Thoms is now an 80-bed private, not-for-profit regional referral center. Care at CarePartners Thoms covers all levels of rehabilitation, from the treatment of minor sports and work injuries on an outpatient basis to rehabilitation programs for serious and critical diseases such as stroke and spinal cord injuries.     The mission of Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) is to provide education, information, technology, research, training, and services to improve health outcomes in Western North Carolina through partnerships and neutrality. We continue to improve the quality of healthcare through recruitment, retention, distribution, appropriate utilization, and development of a diverse healthcare workforce.

    Family Medicine

    The Division of Family Medicine conducts educational programs and services designed to improve the supply of family physicians in Western North Carolina. Its largest component is the Family Medicine Residency Program, which graduates 8 family physicians per year. The goal of the program is to retain as many of its graduates as possible in the communities of Western North Carolina, particularly those that heretofore have been underserved in terms of primary health care services. The division also conducts an active program of family medicine and ambulatory training for health professions students from North Carolina and other states, utilizing community-based teaching practices of outstanding medical providers. Finally, the division conducts research and demonstration studies in order to improve the knowledge base and practice of community medical care in the region.

    Obstetrics and Gynecology

    The Division of Obstetrics and Gynecology conducts educational programs and services designed to improve the availability and quality of health care services to women in Western North Carolina. The Ob/Gyn Residency Program trains obstetrician/gynecologists in a four-year program.

    The division also operates the high risk obstetrical clinic for Perinatal Region VI, which serves the 17 westernmost counties of the state. Finally, the division provides consultation clinics and other assistance to the communities of the region, in order to better coordinate the provision of obstetrical and gynecologic services and subspecialty referral services to the women of Western North Carolina. These services are provided through the Women's Health Center and Regional Ob/Gyn Specialists.

    Regional Education Programs

    The vision of the Division of Regional Services is to be the provider of choice in Western North Carolina for the education and training of health and human service professionals and recognized as a national leader of AHEC services. The division's mission is to serve the needs of health and human service professionals by providing education, information, consultation, technical assistance, strategies for workforce development and special regional projects, thereby enhancing the quality and accessibility of care in Western North Carolina. Our continuing education is provided for medicine, dental, allied health, public health, mental health, nursing, pharmacotherapy and healthcare leadership and management.

    The ABCCM Medical Ministry provides acute and episodic health care services for the uninsured and underinsured of Buncombe County. The Medical Ministry serves individuals who have no private insurance, are not eligible for Medicaid or Medicare, and who meet designated income guidelines. The Ministry provides medical, dental and pharmacy services through the use of professional volunteers in the community.
